Common Symptoms for Children with ADHD

Each year many children are considered as possible ADHD, due to the fact that the symptoms for this disorder are typically child behaviors. The difficulty of dealing with this disorder is then amplified for many parents. The symptoms can also come in varying degrees and types, adding to this frustration. So it’s really best if a parent avoids taking one particular behavior and then thinking the child does have the disorder. An accurate assessment can only be made by a trained medical professional. In hopes of educating more people, we have listed three of the most common symptoms of ADHD.

Behaviors that you can focus on vary, if you believe your child may be ADHD. It is also important that you are aware of the qualities of these behaviors that you are looking for. A child with ADHD will show signs of inattentiveness and lack of focus in all areas of their life. A form of bouncing from one thing to the next may be present. A hyperactive quality may appear to the behavior. What is also very important is that if you observe this kind of behavior for at least about six months. Contact your physician if this behavior persists.

It isn’t an uncommon thing for children to be forgetful. What an amazing symptom type this is. On occasion, we are all forgetful. I am sure you have read about this happening in institutional settings as well.

Forgetfulness in a child with ADHD, however, occurs much more frequently than it does in the average child. Normal for your child will need to be gauged by you the parent. You will notice that it isn’t a once in a while thing, but more like an everyday occurrence. In comparison a child without ADHD will not forget as much as one with ADHD will. The length of time that this forgetfulness goes on is also an important factor.

Another symptom of ADHD is an overall avoidance of mental effort for any length of time. Most kids of course would prefer not to haveto do mental work and instead play their video games. And of course you know homework has never been a popular subject with kids. But still, most children do their schoolwork and are able to sustain the required effort to do so. This is one of the first things that an ADHD child will exhibit, the absolute aversion to activities requiring mental effort. Most often parents will report this behavior upon the child reaching school age requiring homework or other school related work.

When these behaviors are continually observed over time, the possibility that your child has ADHD becomes more real. Before and ADHD diagnosis is made, the behavior should be observed for over a 6 month time frame. If that is the situation with your children, then of course the next course of action is to begin the professional evaluation and assessment stage. Of course start with your doctor, who may then send you on to a specialist.
